In today’s article, I’m going to give you a brief overview of biology and its branches. I will use simple terms so you won’t have any difficulty understanding my language.
What is biology?
There are many types of living organisms around us, from unicellular organisms like bacteria to multicellular organisms like plants and animals. In simple words we can say, the branch of science that studies these living organisms is called biology.
All living organisms, including you and me, collectively make up the biosphere, which is the part of Earth that supports life. Therefore, in other words we can say that biology is the study of life and living organisms. This branch covers a wide range of topics, such as the structure, function, growth, origin, evolution and distribution of organisms.
Who is the father of Biology?
The Greek philosopher Aristotle is known as the “father of biology” and the “father of zoology”.
He gave us complete overview of a variety of animals and initial classification. His approach to the study of life was scientific and based on observations, not supernatural explanations. His systematic method for the study of life was an important precursor to modern biology.
However, Aristotle is the founder of the field of biology (as I mentioned above), he didn’t coin the term. So who did? I’ll answer this question in the next topic (History of Biology).
History of biology:
Jean-Baptiste Lamarck and Gottfried Reinhold Treviranus both independently introduced the term “biology” in 1802 to describe the scientific study of living organisms. Other scientists also introduced it these scientists include Thomas Beddoes (1799) and Karl Friedrich Burdach (1800). However, Lamarck and Treviranus are often credited with it.
Before “biology” became the standard term, “natural history”. Natural history is the field of study of organisms, including animals, fungi, and plants, in their natural environments, and it uses observational methods of study more than experimental methods. This field gives foundational knowledge for other scientific disciplines by observing organisms in their natural habitats. which includes systematic collection, classification, and description, rather than experiments. A person who studies natural history is called naturalist or natural historian.
Two other terms used at the time were natural theology and natural philosophy. Natural philosophy is the early form of science and was based on the explanation of the natural world through reason and observation. This means that natural philosophy was based on the explanation of the natural world through reason and observation rather than relying on supernatural explanations.
Natural theology is the study of divine matters using only human reason and observation of the natural world, without relying on religious texts.
What are the branches of biology?
There are many branches of biology, the three major branches of biology are zoology, botany, and microbiology. Let us understand all the branches of biology one by one.
1) Botany: In botany, we study plants. This means that in this branch of science, we study the structure, growth, development, reproduction, and classification of plants.
Botany has many branches, such as:
- Paleobotany: This branch of botany involves the study of fossil plants.
- Palynology: This branch of botany involves the study of pollen grains and spores.
- Plant Pathology: In this we study about plant diseases..
- Dendrology: In this we study about woody plants like trees and shrubs.
2) Zoology: In zoology, we study animals. This means that in this branch of science, we study the structure, behavior, physiology, and evolution of animals.
Zoology has many branches, such as:
- Entomology: In this we study about insects.
- Ornithology: In this we study about birds.
- Herpetology: It includes the study of reptiles and amphibians.
- Ichthyology: It includes the study of fish.
- Mammalogy: It includes the study of mammals.
- Protozoology: It includes the study of protozoa.
3) Microbiology: In microbiology we study microorganisms. This means that in this branch of science, we study the structure, function, and genetics of microorganisms. Additionally, their interactions with the environment, including their beneficial or harmful effects on other living things and ecosystems.
Microbiology has many branches, such as:
- Bacteriology: It includes the study of bacteria.
- Virology: It includes the study of viruses and viral diseases.
- Mycology: It includes the study fungi, including yeasts and molds.
- Protozoology: It includes the study of protozoa.
- Phycology (or Algology): It includes the study of algae.
4) Genetics: Genetics is the study of heredity, that is, how characters are passed from parents to their children through genes. Let me explain it in simple terms. Resembling your parents is the study of genetics. It explains how traits like appearance, health, and gender are passed from parents to children. In short, your appearance, gender, and health are all influenced by the genes you receive from your biological mother and father.
5) Cell biology: In cell biology is the study of cells. We all know that the cell is the basic unit of all living organisms, including you, your neighbors, your friends, and me. In short, all living organisms are made up of cells. You might be wondering what exactly do we study in this branch?
In this we study the structure, function and behaviour of cells. By function here, I mean how the components of cells, also called organelles, work together to keep an organism alive. This field covers both prokaryotic cells (without a nucleus) as well as eukaryotic cells (with a nucleus). Well I won’t go into depth in my next article, I will explain everything about the cell.
6) Taxonomy: Taxonomy is the science of classifying, naming, and grouping organisms based on their shared characteristics in order to understand their relationships. The traditional ranks are Domain, Kingdom, Phylum, Class, Order, Family, Genus, and Species.
7) Ecology: In ecology we basically study how all living organisms interact with each other and with their physical environment. It includes both biotic as well as abiotic factors.
- Biotic factors: it means living components of the environment, such as plants, animals, fungi and microorganisms.
- Abiotic factors: it means non-living components of the environment, such as temperature, water, soil, and climate.
What are the different types of ecology?
The different types of ecology include-molecular ecology, organismal ecology, population ecology, community ecology, global ecology, landscape ecology and ecosystem ecology.
8) Immunology: In immunology we study the immune system of all living organisms. It explains how the immune system recognises and removes foreign substances while distinguishing them from the bodies on cell.
The immune system is your body’s natural defense system. It fights infections, foreign substances and other diseases. It works by identifying and destroying harmful invaders like bacteria, viruses, fungi, and other foreign particles, and can also identify and destroy abnormal cells, such as cancer cells.
9) Anatomy: In anatomy we study the structure and parts of humans, animals and plants (living organisms). It includes studies from the microscopic level (cells and tissues) to the macroscopic level (organs and organ systems).
The study of the macroscopic level (organs and organ systems) is called gross anatomy. The study of the microscopic level (cells and tissues) is called histology.
10) Biotechnology: Biotechnology is the study of developing or creating products and processes for specific uses using living organisms or their parts that improve human life. It includes biological systems, living organisms, and their components that create or modify products and processes, improving human health and other areas of life.
